Copycat Recipe: Lush Bath Bombs

Copycat LUSH Bath Bombs

I love Lush Cosmetics! I discovered the store years ago when I frequently traveled to Makati City, Philippines for work.  Getting a treat from the Lush store was like putting the bow on a package of a successful business trip.  I was so happy when Lush finally came to the US!  Now, I’m even happier because I discovered this “recipe” for homemade bath bombs – just like the delightful bath treats they sell at Lush.

BONUS: This is so easy, it makes a great indoor activity to do with the kiddos on a rainy day or when it’s too hot (or too cold) to play outside.  My daughter Bali and I had a blast making these and we learned a little about Science along the way too. 🙂

What you need:

  • 1/4 c. Epsom Salt
  • 1 c. Baking Soda
  • Essential Oil of your choice (a few drops)
  • Food Coloring (optional)
  • 1/4 c. Water
  • 1 tsp. Lemon Juice
  • Cookie Dough Baller
  • Parchment Paper or Cookie Sheet

Directions:

  1. Place the epsom salt in a blender and give it a whiz to create a fine powder.
  2. Pour powdered epsom salt in a bowl and stir in the baking soda.
  3. Combine water, lemon juice, essential oil and food coloring in a glass measuring cup.
  4. Add one tsp. of the scented liquid to the powdered mixture and stir well.
  5. Repeat step 4 until the mixture has the consistency of wet sand and will stick together. (Important – please be careful when adding the liquid. You really need just a bit.)
  6. Use the cookie scoop to grab the mixture and then form it into a ball shape with your hands or use a mold to make the shape of your choice.  My daughter and I used a cake pop press mold (seen here) and it worked perfectly.
  7. Place formed bath bombs on a cookie sheet or parchment paper somewhere they won’t be disturbed.
  8. Let the bath bombs dry and harden overnight.
  9. Once hardened, store bath bombs in an airtight container.
  10. Use one or two when you take a bath.  These also make lovely gifts!

If you want to incorporate a SCIENCE LESSON with this fun project, have your child weigh the salt before and after grounding it. Ask your child what he/she thinks will happen when you add the food coloring to the water and when you add the liquid to the powder ingredients. I also love this video about Matter.  It’s only 20 minutes and something fun you can actually watch together.

I’d love to see how your Bath Bombs turn out! Upload and tag me (@jennbare)  on your #BathBomb photo on Instagram!
